Jo Ann Hayes, a beacon of joy and kindness, passed away peacefully of natural causes on December 26, 2024, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Born on July 24, 1941, in Cortland, New York, Jo Ann’s life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and selfless care that spanned over eight decades.
Jo Ann’s early years in Cortland were filled with the simple pleasures of small-town life. After graduating from Cortland high school, she embarked on a career that would define her as much as she defined it. Jo Ann dedicated her life to caregiving, working at various elderly care facilities and providing private care. Her innate ability to nurture was not only her vocation but also her calling.
Her family was the cornerstone of her existence. Jo Ann was a beloved mother to her three sons, James Hayes, Robert (Sheleen Hudelson) Hayes, and Richard (Patricia) Hayes. She was also a cherished sister to Donna Sauer. Jo Ann’s legacy extends through a lineage of 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom she adored with every fiber of her being. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Richard and Lila Stevely, and her brother, Richard Stevely.
Jo Ann’s zest for life was evident in her varied interests. She found solace and joy in the saddle, riding horses through the countryside which she called home. Her gardens were a testament to her patience and passion, blooming with the same love and care she gave to those around her.
Those who knew Jo Ann would describe her as funny, loving, and passionate. She had an infectious laugh that could light up a room and a warmth that made everyone feel like family. Her passion for life was matched only by her passion for caring for others, a trait that made her a cherished friend and confidant to many.
In her quiet moments, Jo Ann found strength and inspiration in the words of Mother Teresa, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” This philosophy was the guiding principle of her life, as she turned everyday acts of kindness into her own great things.
Jo Ann Hayes will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She has left an indelible mark on the hearts of her family, friends, and all the lives she touched with her unwavering love and compassion. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories, laughter, and love she shared with so many.
As we bid farewell to Jo Ann, we take comfort in knowing that her spirit will continue to guide us. Her life was a lesson in love, a story of dedication, and a song of joy and laughter. We are grateful for the time we had with her, and we celebrate the extraordinary life of a remarkable woman.
Jo Ann’s life will be honored in a private ceremony, as per her wishes. Her presence will forever be felt in the blooming of the flowers in her garden, the laughter of her grandchildren, and the quiet moments when we remember her most fondly. Though she has left this earthly realm, her legacy of love and laughter will continue to resonate for generations to come.
Upon her request cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
