RAPID CITY, S.D. – Sculptor Dale Lamphere, South Dakota’s Artist Laureate, has been commissioned to create an art installation in Monument Health Rapid City Hospital’s new lobby. He’s inviting regional artists to join him in creating what he calls “Community Tapestry.”
“It’s the weaving together of diversity that creates the fabric of a community,” Lamphere said.
Lamphere’s piece will feature metal diamonds arranged in a 16-foot-wide by 32-foot-tall space. Twenty of the diamonds will showcase the work of other artists from the Black Hills and western South Dakota.
Artists are invited to submit a detailed proposal, including a sketch, description of materials and colors and a written statement explaining “What Healing Means to Me.” This opportunity is open to individuals, organizations, professional artists, amateurs, craft persons and hobbyists in western South Dakota. All non-electronic media are welcome: beads, quill, paint, quilt, mixed media, wood and metal will be considered.
If your submission is accepted for consideration, Lamphere and Monument Health will pay $100. If your submission is one of the 20 accepted for the final installation, you will receive $2,000 to create it.
“As the South Dakota Artist Laureate, I feel an obligation to encourage other artists,” he said. “We want people of all ages and abilities to share their ideas about healing.” He expects 50 to 75 proposals will be submitted.
The selected creations will be displayed prominently at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital, either woven into the Community Tapestry being created by Lamphere or included in a featured art display in the new hospital. Your name, biography, hometown and thoughts about your creation will be included with the display.
The deadline for submissions is Oct. 16. The selected submissions will be announced Nov. 2, and completed pieces must be delivered by Feb. 1, 2021.
