RAPID CITY, S.D. – One of three people convicted of kidnapping an F.B.I. employee was sentenced to prison on Friday.
Juan Alvarez-Sorto was sentenced to 57 years in prison.
Sorto’s attorney unsuccessfully asked for a downward variance for her client, saying Sorto had taken responsibility.
Prosecutors, however, successfully argued they believe Sorto would continue his bad behavior if and when he’s released.
Alvarez-Sorto was convicted by a federal jury on multiple charges stemming from an incident which occurred in May of 2022.
On May 6, 2022, an FBI Victim Specialist left an unrelated investigation near Oglala and was traveling toward Rapid City when Alvarez-Sorto and another man stopped his vehicle, robbed him, and took him hostage at gunpoint.
