HIGHMORE, S.D- The man killed in a crash Saturday night has been identified. Joseph Boever, 55, of Highmore, died in the crash involving South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg.
According to Tony Mangan, a Department of Public Safety spokesperson, Ravnsborg was driving a 2011 Ford Taurus westbound on U.S. Highway 14 around 10:30 p.m. when he struck Boever. Ravnsborg, who was not injured, called the Hyde County Sheriff’s Office and said he had been involved in a car-deer crash.
According to news reports, Ravnsborg was driving home to Pierre after attending a Spink County Lincoln Day Dinner earlier that evening in Redfield.
Boever’s cousin, former South Dakota Legislator Nick Nemec along with his brother Victor have provided some details about the crash in interviews with media Dakota News Watch and the Argus Leader. Nemec said Boever had hit a bale of hay earlier Saturday evening about one mile west of Junction 14 and 47 at Highmore. He called for help and his cousin Victor gave him a ride back to his home at about 8:30 p.m., telling Boever they would get the pickup Sunday morning.
The next morning, Victor drove by the accident scene, which was about a fourth of a mile west of where Boever’s pickup was in the ditch. Victor alerted the Hyde County Sheriff that his cousin was missing.
His body was found sometime Sunday morning.
Twenty two hours after the crash involving Ravnsborg occurred, Victor and Nick Nemec were asked to identify Boever’s remains.
The Nemecs ssid they don’t know why Boever had apparently tried to return to his pickup Saturday night.
