Margaret Mary (Minnaert) Logan, 95, our beloved mother, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2023, at Monument Health Lead-Deadwood Hospital, Deadwood SD. She will be greatly missed for her loving ways, generosity and concern for others. She always remembered family and friends on birthdays and holidays. Despite her family living throughout the country, she rarely missed celebrating milestones in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives.
Margaret was born December 17, 1928, to Achille August and Luella Dorothy (Erickson) Minnaert on the family farm near Junius, SD. As the oldest of 13 children, Margaret was her mother’s helper, assisting in daily chores on the farm, sewing and cooking. Her lifelong vocation of education began with teaching her younger sisters to sew. She graduated from Orland High School and South Dakota State College in Brookings with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in June 1950. Her first teaching job was in Chester, SD, where she taught Home Economics.
Margaret married Charles Joseph Logan in Madison, SD, on August 27, 1951. Their first home was on Chuck’s family farm near De Smet, SD. Chuck’s job with the Soil Conservation Service led them to Las Animas, CO, to Leola, SD, and then to Belle Fourche, where Margaret was a long-time resident. Margaret was the Home Economics teacher in Leola and a substitute teacher and tutor in Belle Fourche. Throughout the years and moves, the constant was Margaret’s tireless dedication to caring for her family. She was known for cooking delicious meals. Her family especially enjoyed her cinnamon rolls, pies and bread. She always found time to sew clothing and help with school work.
In her later years, Margaret remained active in St. Paul’s Catholic Church; she especially enjoyed her bible study group which she led into her 90s. She was a founding member and historian for the Center of the Nation Concert Series. Margaret volunteered weekly at the Tri-State Museum where she enjoyed engaging with visitors and sharing her stories of growing up in the 1930’s. She was a regular at the Rec Center for swimming and coffee with friends. She also enjoyed her friendships through her bridge group, Inquiry Club and tea group. Her passion for sewing resulted in many quilted treasures that will be enjoyed for generations.
