Maynard “John” Nygaard

Maynard “John” Nygaard of Spearfish died peacefully on January 29, 2024 in Rapid City, SD.

John was born November 11, 1937 in Canby, MN to Johnnie H. Nygaard and Mary F. Cornell Nygaard.  He graduated from Gary High School in Gary, SD and received his Associate Business Degree from National College in Rapid City, SD. He served three years in the US Army; 18 months in Korea with the Army Security Agency where he received the Korean Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.  He married Kathleen Kern and had three daughters, Lisa, Marla and Jennifer.  The family lived in Bloomington, MN for many years.  John worked as an executive for Sears Credit Management for 34 years at various locations around the country.  After he retired from Sears he did seasonal work in Princeville, Hawaii and Custer State Park. He met and married his wife, Mary in 2006. They made their home in Spearfish, SD and enjoyed traveling and visiting family.

John was a member of the Sons of Norway and Countryside Community Church.  He volunteered many hours with Meals on Wheels and various other organizations in the Black Hills.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Nygaard, Spearfish, SD; daughter, Lisa (Fernando) Quevedo, Rochester, MN; daughter, Jennifer Nygaard, Berkeley, CA; step-daughter, Dana (Ron) Sneesby, Spearfish, SD; step-son, Lance (Pam) Perrett, Summerset, SD; grandchildren, Marisa Quevedo, Nicholas Quevedo, Kelsey Quevedo and Kayla Quevedo, Jenni Sneesby, Lily Sneesby and Macy Sneesby, Aly (Brandon) Koel; Cole (Paige) Perrett; Courtney (Evan Janssen) Perrett;  sister, Doris (Jerry) Brinkman, Arcadia, CA; sister, Robin (Bob) Engen, Erie, CO; several cousins and great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and his daughter, Marla.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 2, 2024, 10:00 am at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, SD.  There will be a viewing at 9:00 am.  Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
