PIERRE, S.D. – There were 173 new cases of COVID-19 in the Monday report released by the state Department of Health.
The new cases included 44 around the Black Hills area.
Pennington County added the most with 20 new cases, sending the county’s cumulative total over 2,000 to 2,004. Of those, 322 are active cases.
In Meade County, there were 9 new cases, sending the total to 462 with 100 active cases.
Lawrence County added 7 new cases and the total rose to 334 with 64 active cases.
Other new cases today around the Black Hills area included 7 in Oglala Lakota and one in Custer counties.
The state’s active caseload rose 47 today to 2,890.
The number of people hospitalized dropped 9 today to 161.
No new deaths were reported today. The state’s death toll remained at 202.
1,109 new tests were performed in the latest 24 hour reporting period.
Meanwhile, health officials also updated the COVID-19 numbers within the state’s K-12 schools and universities.
State epidemiologist Dr. Joshua Clayton says there were 261 new cases reported this week, sending the cumulative total to 963. Broken down, that includes 674 students and 289 staff. So far, 678 have recovered. Active cases are 285 as of Monday.
Within the state’s college and universities, there have been 1,172 total with 85 added this past week. Of those, 1,115 are among students and 57 are staff. So far, 1,043 have since recovered from the virus leaving 129 active.
Locally, at Black Hills State University, there are currently 6 active cases with 38 in quarantine or isolation.
At South Dakota Mines, there are 13 active cases with 67 total in quarantine or isolation.
At both universities, all cases are among students and not staff.
