CUSTER, S.D. – Monument Health has confirmed that 18 residents at the Monument Health Custer Care Center have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The remaining 30 residents have tested negative.
Most of the COVID-19 positive residents have no symptoms, and some have mild symptoms. None of the cases are serious enough to require hospitalization at this time. Staff from other Monument Health facilities are being called in to help care for the residents. Families of the COVID-19-positive residents have been notified.
The 18 residents who tested positive for COVID-19 were moved to separate areas of the facility to ensure the safety of the other 30 residents of the Monument Health Custer Care Center. Monument Health physicians are closely monitoring all of the residents of the care center.
Since March 11, all Monument Health long-term care and assisted living centers have been closed to visitors. Within the long-term care and assisted living facilities, caregivers are required to screen for symptoms before beginning their shifts and residents are screened twice a day for fevers and other symptoms.
Monument Health operates the Custer Care Center and Custer Assisted Living, as well as the Sturgis Care Center.
