PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Health reported 149 new cases of COVID-19 Monday out of 703 total tests performed.
Pennington County reported a large number of the new cases in the Black Hills area, as 28 new positive tests were announced.
The 28 new cases raises the county’s cumulative total to 1,070 and of those, 173 are active. The active cases increased by 21 Monday.
Meade County reported 6 new cases as Monument Health resumes testing of asymptomatic residents today. The total number of cases in Meade is now 170 with 67 of those remaining active. The active number of cases is up two today.
State Epidemiologist Joshua Clayton had an update today on the Sturgis Rally-related cases.
“We do have a total of 40 cases that have been associated with attendance at the Sturgis Rally. Most of those are South Dakota cases, but we have had three states report cases to us. That would be Minnesota, North Dakota and Washington state.”
The health department says they haven’t gotten an update yet on the number of positive tests coming from the testing of residents currently underway in Sturgis.
In Lawrence County, 8 new COVID-19 cases were reported. Of the 120 cases reported so far in Lawrence County, 54 are active. The active number of cases is up 7 today.
Custer County reported 4 new cases today and Butte County reported an additional 2 new cases. Custer has 45 active cases and Butte County has 10.
Fall River County also reported their first new case of COVID-19 in over a week Monday.
The statewide active caseload rose 19 Monday to 1,570. There are 65 people hospitalized today – up 3 from Sunday. State Health Secretary Kim Malsom-Rysdon says with the triple-digit increases we have seen over the past week, the good news remains those low number of hospitalizations.
No new deaths due to the virus were reported Monday and total recoveries are now at 9,694, up 130 from Sunday’s 9,564.
Meanwhile,
Health officials also updated the number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota’s schools and universities.
State Epidemiologist Joshua Clayton says 70 cases have now been reported since August 9th among the state’s K-12 schools. Of those, 46 are students and 24 are staff.
As for the state’s colleges and universities, Dr. Clayton says there have been 71 total cases since August 9th with 64 among students and 7 among staff.
