STURGIS, S.D. – The State Department of Health reported 88 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, and 24 of them were reported in several counties around western South Dakota.
Pennington County had the most as 8 new cases were confirmed. The new cases send the cumulative total in the county to 826 and of those, 112 remain active. The active number of cases is up 3 Sunday.
Both Meade and Lawrence County recorded three new cases.
In Meade, the number of active cases is up 2 to 13 as the cumulative total rises to 74. In Lawrence, the active number of cases goes up three to 5 and the cumulative total climbs to 30.
Custer County reported 4 new cases, sending their active caseload to 9 and their cumulative total to 23.
Also reporting new cases were Butte County, who had one, and Oglala Lakota County, who reported 2 new cases.
Butte County’s active caseload is now 3 with 11 total and Oglala Lakota has 23 active cases and 148 total.
Other west river counties reporting a new case were Bennett, Fall River and Jackson.
The state’s active caseload is down two today to 911 as recoveries outpaced the number of new cases.
There are 35 people currently hospitalized, down one from Saturday.
The state also recorded one new death. The new death was out of Minnehaha County. The state’s total number of COVID-19 related deaths is now 135 after two deaths were reported out of Pennington County on Saturday.
