STURGIS, S.D. – A road heavily used by rural Meade County residents is in danger of going back to gravel unless some funding can be found. That from a local committee hoping that doesn’t happen.
Meade County and the state Department of Transportation are working to obtain a federal grant as the first step in the state possibly adding the New Underwood Road onto the state highway system.
Grant Simons is with the New Underwood Road Committee. He tells KBHB News they are hoping county residents can help by sending a letter to the D.O.T. explaining how they use the road and how important it is to them.
Simons says the letters will be sent to the federal transportation department along with the grant application.
He says without the support, the application is unlikely to succeed.
The concern, according to the committee, is that without the funding, New Underwood Road would, at some point, revert back to complete gravel.
New Underwood Road connects state Highway 34 just west of Union Center to I-90 north of New Underwood.
