NEWELL, SD – A small community puts on a really big show when the annual Newell Labor Day Celebration gets underway, Sept. 4-6.
The iconic event attracts people from hundreds of miles, all looking to wrap up summer fun with one last blast over the Labor Day weekend.
From Ranch Rodeo to Tractor Pulls, the celebration delivers with activities and events throughout the community.
Marking it’s 100th graduating class from Newell in 2021, the theme “Century of Education” will flow throughout such events as the All School Reunion and at locations like the Newell Museum.
A Ranch Rodeo at 1pm is among the kick-off events Sat., Sept. 4 followed by a Fireman’s BBQ. A quilt show is open for viewing and there is a 5K Fun Run/Walk/Bike. The following day car shows, tractor pulls, the Coy Price Memorial Roping and the Youth Street Dance are all a part of the schedule.
Miss Rodeo America Jordan Tierney will spend the day at the Newell Labor Day Celebration on Mon., Sept. 6 – the same day as the Newell Labor Day Rodeo and queen coronation. Jordan is from Oral, S.D. She is the 26-year-old daughter of PRCA World Champion and Hall of Famer, Paul Tierney, and Miss Rodeo South Dakota 1985, Robin Tierney. She is a graduate of Chadron State College with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and a Minor in Marketing.

During the Newell Rodeo, Jordan will be helping sell Chase the Ace Tickets, Mutton Busting, Sheep TeePee’ing, and Buckle Presentations. She may even be a special guest competitor in the Family Team Roping Event.
A Cornhole and Mud Volleyball Tournament is set for Sunday as is the Coy Price Memorial Roping. A Tractor Pull gets underway at 2pm and a youth dance at the Newell South Park begins at 8pm. The day’s activities also include a Car Show at 10am.
The Labor Day Parade at 10am is always a favorite, set for Mon., Sept. 6 and following the theme of “Century of Education.” The Labor Day Rodeo begins at 1pm., including the crowd-pleasing ‘SheepTeePeeing’ competition. Throughout the morning, there will be breakfast and lunch available along with a Bake Sale, Bingo in the Park, vendors and more.
