One man dead after Sunday house fire in Belle Fourche

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D.  — Authorities say a man is dead after a structure fire in Belle Fourche Sunday night.

Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere says emergency crews responded to the fire at approximately 5:41 p.m. The fire was located in a house on Prairie Hills Road, which is about a half mile west of Highway 85.

Authorities say the person who reported the fire apparently removed the 77-year-old man from the burning home and medical crews performed C.P.R. on him until he could be transported to the Spearfish hospital. The man died at the hospital. The man’s name has not been released, pending notification of relatives.

Lamphere says when the fire crews arrived, the home was engulfed. Firefighters went into defensive mode to keep the fire from spreading.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday.

Responding agencies to the fire included Belle Fourche, Spearfish and Nisland/Arpan fire departments.
