STURGIS, S.D. — Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says one protestor was arrested after kicking at a passing motorcyclist on Main Street Saturday night.
VanDewater says a small group of protestors gathered in the middle of the street Saturday when one demonstrator kicked the motorcycle as it passed by.
The crowd, witnessing what had happened, began swarming toward the protestors. Police were on hand to restore the peace before things got out of hand.
It wasn’t long after the incident that police escorted the protestors to their vehicles parked several blocks up on Main Street.
The protestors were demonstrating against Republican Governor Kristi Noem’s decision not to shut down South Dakota during the coronavirus pandemic and the fact large gatherings like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally were being held. One protestor held up a sign that featured an expletive and the words Rally, Fair and Rodeo. Another sign said ‘Noem, send the Home.’
There were no serious injuries reported as a result of Saturday evening’s protest.
