STURGIS, S.D. – The Rapid City Police Department is currently investigating a fatal car-vs-pedestrian crash which took place in the evening hours of December 6th, 2019.
On December 6th at around 7:05 p.m., police were dispatched to the area of East Boulevard North and E. North Street for a report of a vehicle that has just struck a pedestrian. The suspect vehicle then fled the area.
Medical personnel arrived on scene and began administering life-saving measures to the pedestrian. Despite life-saving efforts, the pedestrian was declared deceased at the scene. The identity of the deceased is being withheld until proper next-of-kin notifications can be made.
After speaking to witnesses, police determined the suspect vehicle was a red Chevy Trailblazer. Police located the vehicle a short time later parked in the parking lot of 128 E. North Street. Officers noted fresh damage to the front portion of the vehicle, as well as to the windshield. As police arrived to this location, they observed the suspect driver, identified as 25-year-old Zachary Fegueroa of Rapid City, walk around the backside of the business at this address. A witness informed police they had just seen Fegueroa begin running from the area.
A short time later, Fegueroa was located at 415 Spruce Street. He was detained and transported to the Public Safety Building to speak to police. Following his interview and a DUI investigation, Fegueroa was placed under arrest for Vehicular Homicide, DUI, Hit and Run (Injury Accident), and Possession of Marijuana.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Rapid City Police Department.
