Rapid City Police respond to shots fired early Thursday morning

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Police responded to a shots fired call Thursday morning.

Captain James Johns says they responded to the 1700 block of North Maple at approximately 5:00 a.m. to a call of shots fired.

“As officers were responding and getting to the area, they could hear the gunshots going off. We have a large apartment complex that was shot at.”

Calling it a ‘significant event,’ Johns says there are a lot of kids in the neighborhood and that makes this a dangerous situation.

“Right up here, at this apartment complex, we have kids in this neighborhood that are just wandering around, and we have people shooting guns and putting everybody at risk. This is unacceptable behavior. We got an extensive amount of manpower searching for the people responsible for this.”

Johns says they have not received any reports of anyone being shot.

“We have not found anybody at this time that was actually shot. But, we have more than, I’m going to estimate, nine to ten rounds that went into cars and into the buildings here.”

Multiple individuals have been detained, but no definitive suspect or group of suspects have been named.

Police ask anyone with any information on this morning’s incident to contact Rapid City Police at 605-394-4131.
