The gunfire recorded on security footage prompted a strong police response on December 27. Due in part to the footage used by the police, they were able to identify what happened.
Assistant Chief Scott Sitts says they have identified a vehicle involved, a red or maroon SUV in which 3 occupants get out, and take turns shooting multiple rounds from a pistol. He says they then pass that gun back and forth taking turns shooting.
There were also a dozen reports of gunshots on Sunday.
However, police Chief Don Hedrick says most of those reports have been identified as fireworks.
RCPD and Mayor Jason Salamun warned that fireworks are not allowed within the city, and that’s especially important now when many residents are hyper-sensitive about apparent gunshots. Anyone who does use fireworks will be fined.
Rapid City Police Department is actively searching for the shooter or shooters involved in Friday night’s incident.
Questions were raised regarding the slow response of local authorities to address the matter. Police officials cite a communication breakdown and say information will be faster to reach the public.
Authorities say they don’t believe there is a threat to the public currently.
