Rural landmark church burglarized, many irreplaceable items gone

REVA, S.D.  –  Lights on in the community church are usually a welcoming sign.  But not in the case of Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church, a landmark structure on the plains of northwestern South Dakota.

After receiving calls that lights were on in the church where no service or church-related activity was occurring, the Harding County Sheriff’s Office reported a theft that occurred somewhere around October 23 where a thief or thieves took almost every item from the church near Reva, SD – including the tabernacle.

“I never thought I would have to post about this,” wrote Harding County Sheriff Wyatt Sabo on Facebook. “The items stolen from the church are old and irreplaceable and carry a lot of sentimental meaning to the congregation.”

A recent update in the case was the discovery of the tabernacle, found east of Reeder, ND at the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and North Dakota State Highway 22. Sheriff Sabo is asking for the public’s help in keeping an eye out for other items stolen.

And in a recent post wrote this message, “If you were the one who stole the items, drop them off at the church. No questions asked, as you will have to answer to a higher-up than me.”
