STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Sheriff’s office arrested a man Monday after allegedly shooting a dog on his property.
Sheriff Pat West says officers responded to the area of Eagle Ranch Road after receiving reports of gunshots.
West says after an investigation, it was determined that Richard Greenman had called 9-1-1 dispatch and said he had shot a dog on his property.
Greenman was arrested for allegedly violating SDCL 40-1-21, which is intentionally killing or injuring the animal of another. It is a Class I misdemeanor.
West says they have responded to 33 calls for service regarding dogs at large in this area. The Meade County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone that killing or shooting another’s animal is illegal.
The case against Greenman has been turned over to the Meade County State’s Attorney.
