September cattle placements fall three percent in bullish COF report

WASHINGTON, DC – The USDA pegged Oct-21 cattle on feed supply at 98.6% of last year. Placements during Sep-21 came in at 97.1% of last year and marketings were 96.9% of last year. This brought the on- feed number as of October 1st to 98.6% which is well below expectations for 99.4%, and at the low end of expectations.

Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.6 million head on October 1, 2021. The inventory was 1 percent below October 1, 2020. This is the second highest October 1 inventory since the series began in 1996.

Five Rivers Cattle Feeding

The inventory included 7.07 million steers and steer calves, down 3 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 61 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.49 million head, up 2 percent from 2020.

Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.16 million head, 3 percent below 2020. Net placements were 2.11 million head. During September, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 435,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 360,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 495,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 498,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 275,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 100,000 head.

Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 1.79 million head, 3 percent below 2020. Other disappearance totaled 58,000 head during September, unchanged from 2020.

COLORADO:
The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 1,130,000 head as of October 1, 2021. The latest inventory was 5 percent above last month and 2 percent above the October 1, 2020 inventory. The inventory included 640,000 steer and steer calves, 1 percent below the previous year. The number of heifer and heifer calves, at 490,000 head, are up 5 percent from a year ago. Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 165,000 head of fed cattle during September 2021. This was 3 percent below last month’s marketings and 3 percent below the marketings one year earlier.

An estimated 220,000 cattle and calves were placed on feed during September 2021, 2 percent above the previous month’s placements, but 10 percent below September 2020 placements. Of the number placed in September, 14 percent weighed less than 600 pounds, 11 percent weighed from 600 to 699 pounds, 23 percent weighed from 700 to 799 pounds, 27 percent weighed from 800-899 pounds, and 25 percent weighed 900 pounds and greater.

Other disappearance for September, at 5,000 head, was the same as last month and last year.

MINNESOTA:
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Minnesota for feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 90,000 head on October 1, 2021, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Cattle on Feed report. This is unchanged from last month but down 15,000 head from last year.

Placements during September totaled 19,000 head, up 5,000 head from August, but unchanged from last year.

Marketings for September were unchanged from last month but down 5,000 head from last year.

Other disappearance totaled 1,000 head.

IOWA:
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 600,000 head on October 1, 2021, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Cattle on Feed report.

This was up 2 percent from September, but down 2 percent from October 1, 2020. Iowa feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head had 455,000 head on feed, up 1 percent from last month but down 7 percent from last year. Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in all Iowa feedlots totaled 1,055,000 head, up 1 percent from last month but down 4 percent from last year.

Placements of cattle and calves in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during September totaled 80,000 head, up 4 percent from August and up 11 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head placed 62,000 head, up 15 percent from August and up 2 percent from last year.  Placements for all feedlots in Iowa totaled 142,000 head, up 8 percent from August and up 7 percent from last year.

Marketings of fed cattle from Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during September totaled 67,000 head, down 21 percent from August and down 4 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head marketed 54,000 head, down 4 percent from August but unchanged from last year. Marketings for all feedlots in Iowa were 121,000 head, down 14 percent from August and down 2 percent from last year.

Other disappearance from all feedlots in Iowa totaled 6,000 head.

NEBRASKA:
Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.38 million cattle on feed on October 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was down 1% from last year.

Placements during September totaled 545,000 head, down 9% from 2020.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of September totaled 435,000 head, down 5% from last year.

Other disappearance during September totaled 10,000 head, unchanged from last year.

KANSAS:
Kansas feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.53 million cattle on feed on October 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was down slightly from last year.

Placements during September totaled 505,000 head, up 3% from 2020.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of September totaled 435,000 head, up 6% from last year.

Other disappearance during September totaled 10,000 head, unchanged from last year.

OKLAHOMA/TEXAS: This report contains results from the October 2021 Cattle on Feed Survey collected during the first two weeks of October. Data provided by Oklahoma and Texas producers are the foundation of the estimates made for the Southern Plains region.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.73 million head on October 1, 2021, down 5 percent from a year ago. Producers placed 450 thousand head in commercial feedlots during September, unchanged from a year ago.

Texas commercial feeders marketed 405 thousand head during September, down 2 percent from 2020.

On October 1, there were 2.42 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 89 percent of the state’s total. The number on feed across the area was down 5 percent from last year but up 1 percent from the September 1 total.

September placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 399 thousand head, up 11 percent from the August total.

Marketings were up slightly from last month at 360 thousand head.
