South Dakota’s active caseload surpasses 11,000, but fewer new cases reported

STURGIS, S.D. – South Dakota reported a fewer number of new COVID-19 cases Monday, although hospitalizations and active cases increased to new highs.

The state reported 525 new, confirmed cases with 13 probable. That’s the lowest daily count since October 13.

Active cases increased by 316 today to a new high of 11,061. The number of people hospitalized also increased today to 377.

For the first time in six days, there were no new deaths reported today.

As for new cases, there were 122 scattered across West River, with Pennington County accounting for 47 of those.

Pennington County’s cumulative total rises to 4,183 with 1,078 cases remaining active.

Lawrence County added 12 new cases Monday, sending their cumulative total to 848 with 272 active. Meade County added 6 new cases for a total of 906 and 191 active.

Other new cases West River included 23 in Oglala Lakota, 5 in Butte, 4 each in Corson, Lyman and Jackson, 3 each in Custer, Haakon, Gregory and Todd, 2 in Fall River and one each in Tripp, Bennett and Mellette counties.

Meanwhile, the new COVID-19 report for the state’s schools and public universities was released today.

Health officials report 581 new cases within the state’s K-12 schools this past week. As of Monday, there are 761 cases still active among students and staff.

Within the state’s public universities and technical colleges, 126 new cases were reported this past week and 192 remain active.

Locally, Black Hills State University reports 43 active cases, with 40 of those among students. There are 123 currently in isolation or quarantine.

At the South Dakota Mines, there are 11 active cases, with 7 among students. There are 38 currently in isolation or quarantine.
