RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Police Department responded to a weapons-related call in downtown Rapid City Thursday (Oct. 24) following a report of an altercation involving several juveniles. During the altercation, one juvenile reportedly brandished a handgun at another individual before fleeing the scene on foot.
Police located two juvenile males involved in the incident, one of whom was found in possession of the firearm. When officers attempted to detain the armed juvenile, he resisted and began fighting with police. Officers successfully detained him and placed a safety restraint harness on the juvenile to prevent injury.
It was later determined that the recovered handgun had been stolen in a recent vehicle burglary. Authorities are reminding the public that vehicles are a dangerous and inappropriate place to store firearms when left unattended.
