STURGIS, S.D. – After all was said and done, the graduation ceremony at Sturgis Sunday was a success — with proper social distancing.
After weeks of high emotion as to how to hold the ceremony, Sunday’s ‘drive-through’ graduation went off without a hitch in the parking lot of Sturgis Brown High School.
The ceremony included all graduating seniors in vehicles. The vehicles were lined up in alphabetical order according to the senior’s last name. As the student’s name was called, the senior woud exit the vehicle by the stage, receive their diploma, then exit on the other side of the stage, where photographers took pictures. The student then reentered their vehicle.
The stage was provided by Rapid City Summer Nights and Powerhouse D.J.’s and Sound Production set up and provided the entire audio/video for the ceremony.
This year’s student speakers were Jillian Sutton, Ryan Conover, Lydia Rosterdam and Danika Gordon.
Graduation was provided live stream on Facebook for family members who couldn’t attend and was also broadcast on KBHB radio.
Bob Davis, with Sturgis Photo and Gifts provided drone footage that was included in the live stream.
Sturgis Brown High School Principal Pete Wilson was very pleased with the event and wishes the best for all 129 graduating seniors who have showed so much strength and courage during this troubling time.
“We are fortunate to be able to honor our graduates today in the modified graduation ceremony.”
Students also received Sturgis Scooper themed cloth masks to wear, thanks to generous time and donations from several volunteers.
After Sunday’s graduation ceremony, the seniors participated in a parade around Sturgis.
