STURGIS, S.D. – It was a bit of a crazy morning for Sturgis police after they received a so-called “spoof” call.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says officers were called to the Sturgis Motel on Main Street for a subject with a gun threatening the reporting party on the second floor.
Officers and deputies responded and were searching the motel when the reporting party advised dispatch there were shots fired.
VanDewater says thankfully, this was not actually happening and it was soon determined that the subject was watching the live cameras outside the motel. By doing so, the caller could tell dispatch he “saw law enforcement outside.”
Police were investigating the “spoof” call.
VanDewater says unfortunately, they have been seeing more and more of these types of calls in our area.
They are dangerous and take officers and deputies away from a possible real emergency.
