Sturgis, SD Girl Scout Bethany Schaefer to Receive the Gold Award

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – On Thursday, Girl Scouts-Dakota Horizons congratulated Bethany Schaefer of Sturgis, SD for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award to be achieved in Girl Scouts.

Bethany Schaefer, Sturgis, has been selected to receive the highest honor presented by the Girl Scouts organization.

Bethany earned her Gold Award with her Epilepsy Awareness Project which resulted in the creation of informational videos posted to YouTube. She invested 41 hours over the span of three months to research, write scripts, record and post the videos.

Her accomplishment reflects leadership and citizenship skills, foundational skills built through Girl Scouts.  “Girl Scouts has helped me learn valuable life skills,” Bethany stated. “it means a lot to me to have reached this goal.”

By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, Bethany has become a community leader and joins an elite group of Girl Scouts; as the Gold Award is awarded to fewer than six percent of Girl Scouts annually.

Since 1916, Girl Scouts have been making meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and around the world. The Girl Scout Gold Award acknowledges the power behind each Gold Award Girl Scout’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others through remarkable Take Action projects that have a sustainable impact in their communities and beyond.

“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is truly a remarkable achievement,” said Marla Meyer, CEO “Bethany’s dedication, perseverance, and leadership is making the world a better place, and we’re honored to present her this award.”

Bethany is a Senior at Sturgis Brown High School. She will receive her award at the council’s Honoring Excellence recognition event to be held in June of 2021.
