SURF Foundation closing in on fundraising goal for Sacred Circle Garden

DEADWOOD, S.D. – The Sanford Underground Research Facility Foundation is closing in on its fundraising goal of $800,000 to build a Cangleska Wakan, or Sacred Circle Garden.

Lakota in origin, Cangleska Wakan reminds us that everything in the universe is connected.

Staci Miller, Foundation Director, says they want to create a space to protect, respect and understand the area’s vibrant history, environment and the connections we all share.

“The foundation is taking steps to recognize the diversity of the many peoples who call this place home,” Miller told KBHB Friday morning.

“We are creating an ethnobotanical garden as a way to better understand the indigenous cultures of the Black Hills.”

The garden will be located on a hilltop meadow at SURF.

Plans for the garden are nearly complete and a dedication ceremony is being planned for the fall of 2023.

Miller says so far, they have raised $449,000.
