SPEARFISH, SD – The Sturgis Post 33 Titans and the Spearfish Post 164 Spartans met for a doubleheader at Black Hills Energy Stadium on Monday night, with both squads earning a victory.
Post 33 lost 12-5 in game one to Post 164, but the Titans used dominant pitching and timely hitting to win the nightcap, 8-3.Â
The Spartans and the Titans were knotted up at one run apiece after one inning in game one, but Post 164 pulled away and led 11-2 after four innings and never looked back, securing the 12-5 win.Â
Sean Sewell got the win for Spearfish and Aiden Wood took the loss for Post 33. The Spartans finished with eight hits and were led by Tucker Olson, who went 3-for-3 at the dish. Sturgis collected 10 hits and left eight on base. Â Jack Knutson, Elijah Stroud and Evan Stroud each had two hits for Post 33.
Game two turned out to be a pitcher’s duel, with Brody Royer and Cody Chapman throwing fireballs for Sturgis and Spearfish, respectively.
The game was tied at three runs apiece headed into the top of the seventh, when the Titan bats came alive. Sturgis scored five runs on four hits, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. Spearfish had no answer in the bottom half of the inning and Post 33 got the win, snapping a three-game losing streak.Â
Royer pitched a gem for the Titans, throwing 103 pitches through 6 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits and striking out nine. Evan Stroud got the save. Chapman took the loss for Post 164.Â
Sturgis finished with 11 hits and were led by Kjell Sundstrom and Xander Heller with three hits apiece. Spearfish had eight hits and left four on base. Â Tucker Olson went 2-for-3 with a single and a triple for Post 164.Â
Sturgis (4-15) hosts Rapid City Post 22 at Strong Field on Thursday. The doubleheader is scheduled for 5pm and 7pm.Â
