STURGIS, S.D. – For the second time this summer, the tornado warning siren in Sturgis went off last night as severe weather rolled through the area.
The tornado warning was issued just before 8 o’clock for a thunderstorm was showing possible tornadic activity on radar.
Under the warning were the St Onge and Sturgis areas.
Forecasters haven’t received any official reports of a tornado touching the ground, but they have received reports of very gusty winds, rain, some hail and a spectacular lightning show.
The storm brought winds as high as 70 miles per hour, which were reported in the Whitewood area.
The tornado warning was in effect for about 15 minutes before it was allowed to expire at 8:15 p.m. The tornado was part of a large swath of storms that continued eastward onto the western South Dakota plains.
