With no opening ceremony, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally officially opens today

STURGIS, S.D. – The first official day of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally looks a little different than in year’s past.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are no city-sponsored events this year, leaving motorcyclists to find other forms of entertainment on Main Street.

There are plenty of vendors to help them out.

The city says they have issued 435 temporary vending permits as of this morning. This is down from last year’s 513 permits on the same day last year.

However, despite the fact there are less vendors, there are more new and unique vendors this year. For example, there is a carnival on Lazelle Street that will offer rides and more through the week of the rally.

Main Street closed to motorcycles only early Friday morning and will remain that way until Sunday, August 16th.
