Woman charged in fatal stabbing being held on $250,000 cash bond

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The woman accused of fatally stabbing a man Tuesday remains in jail in lieu of $250,000 cash bond.

34-year-old Ashley Peltier has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of James Steven Rice.

Investigators say Peltier called police on Tuesday night and admitted to stabbing Rice during an argument “to make a point.”

During an interview with authorities, Peltier said she picked up a knife, threatened Rice with it, and stabbed him when he stepped towards her to take the knife away.

Court documents show that Peltier offered no defense for her actions, told investigators she “just snapped,” and said she did not feel threatened by him.

Peltier is being held at the Pennington County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond.
