STURGIS, S.D. – South Dakota’s active number of COVID-19 cases broke 10,000 for the first time Saturday as 852 new, confirmed cases of the virus were reported, along with 87 probable cases.
Active cases rose to 10,218, total hospitalizations increased by 7, and there were an additional 10 new deaths reported.
The total number of hospitalizations is 356 Saturday. In the Black Hills, there are currently 100 people hospitalized due to COVID-19. Of those, 10 are using I.C.U. beds. Hospitals across the Black Hills report COVID-19 patients are occupying approximately 22.7-percent of I.C.U. beds and 17.7-percent are occupying general hospital beds. Available I.C.U. beds around the Black Hills are down to 13.6-percent, however, nearly 64-percent of the beds are being used by non-OCVID-19-related patients.
The 10 new deaths today raise the state’s death toll to 366 as October continues to see increasing numbers of COVID-19 related fatalities. The new deaths were six women and four men with three in the 60-69 age range, two in the 70-79 age range and five in the 80+ age range. The new deaths included one out of Meade County, the tenth total since the pandemic began. Other deaths included four in Jerauld, three in Minnehaha and one each out of Lincoln and Todd counties. As the deadliest month since the pandemic began, October has seen 143 deaths.
New cases today across West River totaled 300.
Pennington County added 133 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, raising the cumulative total above 4,000 to 4,042. Active cases breached 1,000 for the first time to 1,016.
Lawrence County added 42 new cases today, and the cumulative total rose above 800 to 814. There are 259 active cases.
Meade County added 31 new cases, and the cumulative total rises to 885 with 192 active.
Butte County reported 19 new cases for a total of 293 and 128 remain active.
And, Oglala Lakota County, where a lockdown is in place, reported 27 new cases today. Their total rises to 797 and there are 419 active cases.
Other new cases across West River Saturday include 7 in Corson, 6 in Custer, 5 each in Stanley, Mellette and Todd, 4 in Gregory, 3 each in Lyman and Bennett, 2 each in Harding, Perkins, Haakon and Jones and one each in Fall River and Tripp counties.
