RAPID CITY, S.D. – A working group within the Black Hills National Forest Advisory Board has recommended more logging in the coming years.
The group has been working on a five year plan for timber sustainability.
Curently, the target for timber harvest is 175,000 cubic feet per year. The board is reccomending 181,000 CCF.
Jack Isaacs is the active forest supervisor for the Black Hills and says logging helps manage the forest and adds to the local economy.
Isaacs says certain areas of the Black Hills National Forest are deemed suitable for timber logging and once identified, bids will go out to private industry.
The 181, CCF is equal to the maximum amount of timber sales allowed in the forest’s current master plan, dating back to 1997.
