STURGIS, S.D. – After much discussion, the Sturgis City Council passed second and final reading of the latest supplement to the 2023 budget at their Monday night meeting.
The passage follows the tabling of the matter earlier this month after citizen concerns about a $300,000 supplement for Rally Merchandise.
This year, the city is partnering with year-round downtown and regional businesses to offer city merchandise for sale throughout the tourist season. The program would require the purchase of additional inventory which include the city’s new winged “S” brand.
Some business owners, however, felt $300,000 was a little too much. So, City Director of Communications Deb Holland says they did some negotiating.
Holland says those infrastructure projects include adding the winged “S” to more locations downtown.
She says the city wants the brand to become synonymous with the Rally.
Holland says their goal is long term recognition of the brand.
Also part of the supplement is $220,000 for a new indoor batting facility and $460,000 for the city’s new sponsor banner poles, which are currently being installed at various locations around town.
