STURGIS, S.D. – Blizzard conditions continued into Saturday evening, and the South Dakota Department of Transportation decided to shut down I-90 from Sturgis to the Wyoming line.
Accumulating snow and strong winds are anticipated to make I-90 impassable during the overnight hours.
The SDDOT anticipates secondary highways will also become impassable throughout the night. Numerous No Travel Advisories remain in place on state highways throughout the western part of the state.
The winter weather conditions are making travel in the following counties extremely difficult: western Pennington, Meade, and Lawrence.
In Sturgis, snow totals were nearing a foot, although due to the high winds, drifting snow was becoming a real problem.
Sturgis police say there are numerous vehicles stuck around town and there are limited resources to help. Furthermore, the stuck vehicles also pose a problem to crews trying to clear the roads.
