Fire crews gain 80-percent containment on Perkins County Fire that has scorched 8,000 acres

BISON, S.D. – A fire burning in Perkins County is listed at approximately 8,000 acres but is 80-percent contained.

The Divide Fire was reported Monday evening west of Bison.

Fire Information Officer Shane Penfield with the Bison Fire Department says it quickly crossed Highway 20, about a mile south of the Bison Golf Course.

He says no homes were lost as a result of the fire however some outbuildings were not able to be saved. As of this morning no injuries were reported but some livestock has been reported lost.

The Sheriff’s office is asking residents to please reduce speed and use extreme caution while traveling in the area of the Divide Fire. Crews continue to work in the area and visibility is very limited due to blowing dirt and ash.

Penfield says there has been no spread outside the established burn perimeter so far today, but smoke is expected to continue for several days.

Grand Electric Cooperative announced today that some of their customers in the fire area are without power.

In a release, Grand Electric reported that customers out of the Ellingson substation are without power. The Coop hopes to get that area repaired and restored as quickly as possible.

It says crews will be out assessing the damage and making repairs to the line sections damaged by the fire. If you have seen broken or burned poles, you’re asked to please report those as well.
