STURGIS, S.D. – According to health officials, the state’s active COVID-19 cases decreased 103 Sunday, but the number of hospitalizations continued to rise.
In its Sunday report, the Department of Health reported 252 new cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, but the number of active cases went down to 2,843 when coupled with new recoveries.
However, state officials say the number of people hospitalized due to the virus jumped 17 today to 170. As of Sunday, health officials report 7-percent of all hospital beds across the state are occupied by COVID-19 patients. That compares with 43-percent non COVID-19 occupied hospital beds. Five-percent of the state’s I.C.U. beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients.
Two new deaths were also reported, sending the state’s total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 202. The two deaths were men in the 70-79 and 80+ age ranges. They were both from Minnehaha County.
New numbers around the Black Hills region included 24 new cases out of Pennington County. The county’s total is now 1,984 and the active number of cases tumbled 29 today to 308.
In Meade County, 9 new COVID-19 cases were reported, sending the total to 453 with 91 remaining active. The active cases are down 6 today in Meade.
Lawrence County reported 6 new cases Sunday, sending their total number of cases to 327 with 59 remaining active. Active cases in Lawrence are down 5 today.
Other new cases around the Black Hills area included 3 in Oglala Lakota, 2 in Custer and one in Butte counties.
Across all of West River South Dakota, there were 72 new cases and Dewey County accounted for 13.
There were 1,132 new persons tested reported on Sunday.
