STURGIS, S.D. – Some light freezing rain and snow made for a slippery morning commute Friday.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol were working numerous accidents on I-90 between Rapid City and Wall.
The sheriff’s office reported accidents at exits 107, 72, and 60, including a semi truck that had rolled onto its side.
The accidents had shut down traffic in certain areas as law enforcement and clean up crews worked to clear them.
No travel advisories went out for several areas, including I-90 between Piedmont and Wall, Highway 79 south of Rapid City, U.S. Highway 16A and Highway 44 east and west of Rapid City.
In Sturgis, black ice was reported as a no travel advisory was issued until crews could get out and treat them. Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater says drivers in town handled the situation well, although officers helped the Meade County Sheriff’s Department with an accident in Vanocker Canyon.
The Meade 46-1 School District was among several others that had a 2-hour late start because of the poor travel conditions.
