Large hail pummels parts of Western South Dakota Thursday

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms brought heavy wind and large hail to parts of western South Dakota Thursday.

A thunderstorm that developed over the western South Dakota plains dropped golf ball sized hail in the Newell area before heading southeast, and pummeling the New Underwood area.

The storm crossed over I-90, and large hail ended up disabling several vehicles, breaking windshields and causing significant damage.

In New Underwood, there are reports of damaged roofs and siding and broken windows from the hail, which was the size of tennis balls in some places.

A separate thunderstorm farther to the north dropped 2.50-inch hail south of Faith. There were also reports of  2 inch hail near Bison in Perkins County and one inch hail was reported in Dupree.
