Long cold snap results in icing dangers along Spearfish Creek

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The extremely cold weather is causing some ice problems along Spearfish Creek where a flood advisory was issued on Tuesday.

The City of Spearfish says the creek is one of the few bodies of water in the world that freezes from the bottom up. This phenomenon results in the water that is still flowing being pushed upward as it is displaced by the ice filling the creek bed.

The long cold snap has resulted in ice buildup that has flooded several areas of town. Officials say several areas of the rec path and some streets are currently impacted by ice.

Along Jackson Boulevard, the creek is nearly touching the bottom of the bridge at its crossing.

City officials are urging people to avoid these areas and use caution anywhere along the creek where there is ice out of the stream path. Do no walk on the ice that is near or on the creek bed.
