STURGIS, S.D. – The new U.S. Drought Monitor map out today indicates most of Northwestern South Dakota remains in extreme drought conditions.
The northern tier of Meade County is in that D3 category, along with all of Harding County, Perkins and Corson County and part of Butte and Ziebach County.
Most of central and southern Meade County is in D2, or severe drought. Lawrence County in D1, or moderate drought, except for the extreme northern section of the county, which is in D2.
Southwestern South Dakota is fairing better, with most of the area in moderate drought or abnormally dry.
The only area of South Dakota listed as normal is a portion of northeastern South Dakota.
North Dakota is showing the worst of the drought conditions. A portion of north central North Dakota covering the Missouri River is in exceptional drought. More than two-thirds of the state is in extreme drought.
