STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Commission has passed first reading of a noise ordinance.
The ordinance was prompted after residents in the Pleasant Valley area had complained after a nearby campground had hosted a series of concerts that went well into the night.
The commission passed first reading although there was some discussion on whether or not the ordinance would be enforceable. Meade County Sheriff Pat West says it’s difficult to determine who is violating the ordinance.
The ordinance will limit noise disturbances from 10:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on weekends. It proposes a $500 fine and/or 30 days in jail for each violation.
The commission is expected to further discuss the ordinance at second reading scheduled for February 13.
