RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Council this week approved $15 million in surplus, undesignated funds for the Rapid City Fire Department to refurbish Station One downtown.
Tessa Jaeger, public information officers for the RCFD, says she is pleased the city council viewed the issue with the same urgency as the fire department.
“We are super happy and super thankful for the vote in our favor to be able to start work on the Station One remodel.”
The cramped building will expand to 40,000 square feet, giving them plenty of room for both firefighting necessities and comforts.
Jaeger says the comfort of those firefighters, many of whom work 48Â consecutive hours at a time, cannot be overlooked.
“We’re gonna be able to add our fire and life safety division to downtown, which will be super beneficial. These are the folks who are our education and our fire marshall who investigate fires.”
Jaeger says they will also be able to house more of the ambulances and engines that are in cold storage.
The motion was approved on a 7-2 vote.
