RAPID CITY, S.D. – Authorities say 29-year-old Arlen Hatten of Rapid City has been placed under arrest for two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder as police investigate a shooting incident that took place outside of a residence in the 1700 block of E. Highway 44.
At around 6:45 a.m. on July 20th, police were dispatched to a residence in the 1700 block of E. Highway 44 for a report of a shooting that had just occurred. A silver passenger vehicle was seen leaving the residence. Police observed the vehicle travelling westbound on Omaha Street. The vehicle was stopped and it was determined two of the four occupants had been shot. Emergency first aid was rendered to the injured occupants. Medical units were called and transported both injured occupants to the hospital. The driver was transported with serious injuries and the front-seat passenger was transported with life-threatening injuries.
After speaking to witnesses, police determined Hatten to be the shooter. He was located at a business near Exit 61 of Interstate-90. He was detained and transported to the Public Safety Building to be interviewed about the incident. Following the interview, Hatten was placed under arrest for two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder before being transported to the Pennington County Jail.
Police and members of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office continue to actively investigate the incident. Additional charges are pending in the case.
