RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Police Department is searching for a suspect that is responsible for a shooting that occurred in a Hemlock Street residence.
The shooting killed one person and injured another.
At about 3:05 a.m. on September 6, the police were called to a residence in the 3800 block of Hemlock Street for a report of a shooting that had taken place. When police arrived, they found a man that was lying on the floor of a garage with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Police performed emergency life-saving measures on the victim until a medical unit arrived on scene. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
At about the same time during the call on Hemlock Street, police were called to a residence in the 1100 block of Sycamore Street for a report of an injured male in the driveway of the person who called the police.
When police arrived, they located the individual and noticed that the male victim had also received a gunshot wound. Police performed life saving measures and first aid before a medical unit arrived to transport the victim to the hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
At this point in the investigation, police say that it appears the shooting happened as a result of a dispute during a party at the Hemlock residence. Preliminary evidence has given reason for police to look into a potential drug connection that may be related to the incident.
The residence with the connection is known by law enforcement, and was also the same location of another shooting that critically injured a juvenile in the late hours of July 30.
Police are actively searching for the suspect that’s involved in the case. It’s believed that the suspect knew the shooting victims and that the acts don’t appear to be random.
While there is no ongoing threat to public safety, police are working to locate certain persons that were present during the shooting and wanted for questioning about the incident. They are as follows:
38-year-old Cory Tobacco of Rapid City
48-year-old Lonnie Richards of Rapid City
·18-year-old Nettie Richards of Rapid City
