RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pennington County Search and Rescue was dispatched to Memorial Pond late Tuesday afternoon after receiving a report of a person who went underwater.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office say witnesses told them an individual went into the water to retrieve something and never came back out.

Law enforcement say the call came in around 2:45 p.m. and divers began searching right away.

Divers found the individual in a little under an hour and pulled him from the pond. Despite efforts to revive the man, he was declared dead at the scene.

The identity of the man is being withheld until notification of next of kin can be made.
