South Dakota’s COVID-19 related death toll surpasses 2,000 Thursday

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota’s COVID-19 related death toll surpassed 2,000 today as the State Department of Health reported 7 new deaths. The new deaths were all men in the 40-49, 60-69, 70-79 and 80-plus age ranges.

The death toll now since the pandemic began is 2,001.

There were 55 new COVID-19 cases today; of which, 22 were listed as probable.

Active cases declined 40 over the past 24 hours to 634 but the number of people hospitalized increased by 4 from Wednesday to 57 on Thursday.

Across the Black Hills area, Pennington County had 11 new cases today, with 6 of those listed as probable.

Meade and Oglala Lakota Counties each reported 3 new cases and Lawrence and Custer County each reported one new case.

As of Thursday, 53.33% of the population 12-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 48.25% have completed the vaccination series.
