State sees sharp spike in new cases of COVID-19 Friday

PIERRE, S.D. – For the first time since January 22nd, new cases of COVID-19 surpassed 300 in the state today. Health officials listed 316 new cases with 45 of them considered as probable.

Active cases also were back up over 22-hundred at 2,240. The number of people hospitalized was up 3 today to 68.

No new deaths were reported, keeping the state’s death toll at 1,919.

Of the 316 new cases, 106 of them were listed around the Black Hills area. Pennington County recorded 40 of the cases, with 1 of them listed as probable.

Lawrence saw a sharp spike with 33 new cases reported, sending the county’s total to 2,875.

Meade County added 15 new cases Friday, with two of those listed as probable.

Butte County surpassed 1,000 cases Friday, adding 12 new cases.

Custer County added 3 new cases, Oglala Lakota County added 2 and Fall River County had one.
