STURGIS — At their Monday night meeting, the Sturgis City Council will discuss whether or not to purchase a piece of property that could be the future site of the Sturgis Lakeside Adventure Park.
The Richards Property is located in southwest Sturgis off Vanocker Canyon Road.
Initial plans called for the park to be located on the site of the Sturgis Fairgrounds on Ballpark Road. But at a special meeting of the council on Jan. 10, the new location was discussed.
The 77 acres of land is for sale for $2.2 million by longtime Sturgis resident Dave Richards.
Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen said discussions on the purchase of the Richards property is the first step. A determination of building the lake and lakeside park will come later.
Carstensen said if the council votes to move forward, they would have the city’s Legal and Finance Committee as well as City Attorney Mark Marshall negotiate an agreement for the purchase with Richards and his representatives.
Any proposed agreement would be brought for consideration to the city council at its Feb. 22 meeting.
Also at Monday’s meeting, the council will continue discussion of setting up an Office of the City Manager Subcommittee.
The council is expected to appoint members to that subcommittee Monday night.
Also on the agenda, the city is expected to approve the withdrawal of the Petition for Declaratory Judgement regarding a petition that was turned in seeking to eliminate the city manager form of government in Sturgis.
The city had sought an opinion from the State Board of Elections on whether or not the question asked in the petition was proper. However, because the petition sponsors have taken the issue to court, the declaration is no longer needed.
