STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council this week passed second and final reading of Ordinance 2024-04, which will life the current cap on the number of malt beverage licenses in town.
Currently, the city sets the total number of standard malt beverage licenses at 40.
In recent months, the City had reached the maximum number of licenses.
Sturgis Mayor Angela Wilkerson had earlier said an important problem with the limit is that a sizeable portion of the licenses are held by businesses which operate primarily during the Rally. She says the limit may prevent future businesses who intend to operate year round business from obtaining one.
South Dakota law empowers cities across the state to set their own number of malt beverage licenses. Only the maximum number of on-sale liquor licenses are statutorily limited by population.
