STURGIS, S.D. – A long time law enforcement agent has announced he is running for Meade County Sheriff.
Pat West announced via a press release Tuesday his intention to run for the spot currently occupied by long-time sheriff Ron Merwin.
West says he has served the citizens of South Dakota for the past 30 years and he wants to continue that public service as Meade County Sheriff.
“I’ve served the citizens of South Dakota for the past 30 years,” said West. “I want to continue that public service as your Meade County Sheriff.”
West says he would like the opportunity to take on this new challenge.
“During my career in law enforcement, I have worked closely with the South Dakota Chiefs of Police and Sheriff’s to include Meade County. I understand and recognize the important role of the Sheriff and I am excited for the opportunity to take on this new challenge.”
West, originally from Philip, has lived in Meade County for 18 years. He and his wife Cassie, have been married for 23 years and have three boys, Justice, Gavin and Gage, as well as daughter Tessa.
West retired as a Supervisory Special Agent with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation in 2017, but continues to work as a Drug Diversion/Prescription Fraud investigator with the D.C.I.

Incumbent Sheriff Ron Merwin has not announced yet if he is running for re-election.
